Science Notes

Rattlesnake in a Moving Car
will be highlighted in the Summer 2005 edition of the online science journal, Science Notes.

The highly regarded magazine is written and illustrated by students at the University of California, Santa Cruz in the Science Communication Program. The main article by Hannah Hickey is about the search for an AIDS vaccine. Rattlesnake in a Moving Car will be featured in the sidebar article, and the illustrator Beth Guy utilized elements from the portraits in Rattlesnake to accompany it. The layout is by Ken Chang of the NYTimes. Be on the lookout for it!  http://scicom.ucsc.edu/SciNotes/

Space 743 preview

The progress showing of Rattlesnake in a Moving Car at Space 743 in San Francisco was a success.  It featured 11 of the portraits and six of the sculptures, some of which had not been previously shown in public.

Subtitled "Illuminating the Vision with Sight and Sound", the show also highlighted the new sound and lighting system designed by John Cavala of John Cavala & Associates. Images of his great design concepts are shown below.  They promise to make the exhibition an even clearer and more powerful experience for the viewer.

Illuminating the Vision with Sight and Sound
1. Working from his preliminary sketches to assess lighting and sound needs for Rattlesnake in a Moving Car, John Cavala of John Cavala & Associates used a 3D modeling program to determine the precise placement of the different elements.

2. A conceptual view of Rattlesnake in a Moving Car as seen from a normal viewing point within the exhibition space. Two different types of lights will be used. One type gives overall illumination to each portrait and accompanying sculpture, and the other one highlights a particular portrait when sound is activated.

3. A bird's-eye view of the installation depicting a central truss system to support the lighting and sound equipment. Another option being reviewed is a lightweight system attached to the walls and cantilevered out over each portrait/sculpture segment.
